PictureMindaugas, King of Lithuania (1200-1263)
... that today (July 6) Lithuania celebrates the day of its Statehood? On that day back in 1253 the first King of Lithuania, Mindaugas, was crowned. Mindaugas (read min-dow-gahs) was the first to unite the Lithuanian territories into a state, which gave rise to the powerful Grand Duchy of Lithuania - the largest country in Europe at its peak in the 15th century.

Mindaugas remains a well know historical figure - an a popular name for boys up to this day.

On the left you can see a somewhat "Lord of the Ring"-ish artist's impression of the Lithuanian King.

... that basketball is the most popular sport in Lithuania? The passion dates back to when Lithuania competed in two  pre-war EuroBasket competitions and won them both (in 1937 and 1939). After regaining its independence, Lithuania won bronze medals in three out of six Olympic tournaments and won the EuroBasket for the third time in 2003.  It also won the bronze medal in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Basketball championships generate an enormous amount of interest in Lithuania at all times.

... that Lithuanian language is the most ancient living language in Europe? It belongs to the rare family of Baltic languages. Only two Baltic languages survive to date - Lithuanian and Latvian.

Estonia, which neighbors Latvia and Lithuania, is also located next to the Baltic Sea. The three countries are commonly referred to as "the Baltic States". Estonian language, however, is from Finno-Ugric family (same as Finish and Hungarian).
